PANꙮPTICON
ROSARIUM

I'm Panopticon Rose (she | ae). “Real” names represent an accession to state power over our linguistic reality, and accordingly I never use them. I work with digital collage to make the world a weirder place. This website has some of the results.

I can also be found on Bluesky.

Digital collage

I conceive of collage or montage as an imaginal alchemy, where the collageist assembles a corpus of source images and removes them from their context (nigredo), cuts them down (albedo), then combines the results into images that reference things not shown in any of the original images (rubedo).

Traditional collage works by cutting up images and making them adjacent in space. The image is a field which can be shaped or arranged but cannot be violated. Digitally, an image is an array of tuples. This enables putting images on top of each other and blending them: averages (basic transparency, say 80% of one and 20% of the other), one channel from one and another from the other, or more complex operations.

The relationship between the image and the number which encode it it is basically arbitrary. Digital collage works in the space afforded by this arbitrariness to reveal images that do not exist, but could. I aim to wield a rough and subtle scalpel to cut the control lines which connect represented to representation, and disrupt and make visible the means of image production.
